FOSS @ Bangalore

Foss.in - The Indian opensource event ended on 8th December. The turnout this year was lower than last year despite changes in event structure [Event had an unconference model this year]

The first two days of the conference - called Project Days, were dedicated to specific opensource projects. The project days was aimed at making people contribute to OpenSource rather than just being the users of it. We had OpenSolaris, OpenOffice, Mozilla and Linux project days.

The main conference started (Late as usual) on 6th Dec with a speech by Atul Chitnis. The main conference had a mix of Lightning talks, BOFs and HackCenters. I was busy(?) with the demos in the booth and so, missed a majority of the talks. I could manage a talk on IndLinux, a talk on OpenSolaris (by Jim Gresanzio) and a BOF on Glassfish.

I had an opportunity to meet a variety of people from various backgrounds. A few of them wanted solutions for their business needs, others wanted to evaluate the open source tools. Overall, the event was wonderful and it would have been even more interesting with a larger crowd. Looking forward to FOSS 08.

For want of a nail

Yesterday, I told my friend that we usually miss out on small things when working on a bigger issue and that would ultimately lead to failure. It reminded me of a rhyme I had learnt in my formative years called "For Want of a Nail".  This rhyme is sometimes quoted to explain butterfly effect and chaos theory. For want of a nail the shoe was lost. For want of a shoe the horse was lost. For want of a horse the rider was lost. For want of a rider the battle was lost. For want of a battle the kingdom was lost. And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.

My blood is purple

The news about Oracle acquisition broke out on Monday evening at 5. There were lot of things running in my mind and wanted to blog about it. Meanwhile, Puspha had mailed me a blog entry and it was more or less on the same lines as my thoughts. I have reproduced the blog content below ...

Outsourcing - The Simpsons Version

This video is an edited version of The Simpsons programme. Homer's manufacturing facility is outsourced to bangalore and he travels to India. How he adapts himself to Indian environment is the gist of the episode. Hilarious. Edit1: Full version of the simpsons video can be found here - The Simpsons 1717 Kiss Kiss Bang Bangalore
