You'd be wondering why I say this when Apple is hogging the limelight for their IPAD and IPhone 4.0 OS releases. Before giving you any explanations, I want to say this again - APPLE sucks.
I've been a proud owner of an IPod touch 2G for the last 14 months and I still love that device.
So what's the problem?
One of the main features of IPhone OS 4.0 is the multi-tasking feature and Apple says IPhone 3G and IPod Touch 2G will not get this feature. It will ONLY be available in IPhone 3GS and IPod Touch 3G.
Is that a feature worth ranting?
Multi-tasking allows me to do more than one thing at the same time. If I want to check a mail while browsing, With tht current feature set, I'll have to close my browser and open mail app. With multi-tasking, I can go and check the mail while the browser is running in the background and then switch back to browser and continue from the same place I left.
Another example would be to have Skype running in the background and me reading a book. If someone pings me, multi-tasking allows me to respond to them immediately and come back and continue reading from the same place.
If they don't provide this feature, then probably your hardware does not support this!
In Jail Broken IPhones & IPod Touches, this feature is available for the last three years. A bunch of people with outdated computers have created it three years back and it works seamlessly with the older devices. It is that Apple is releasing this feature "officially" three years late. Some people guess that it may run slower in the older hardware - but still I should be given an option to turn on or off multitasking.
Then why not Jail-Break your IPhone & IPod touch and use these applications ?
Jailbreakjing the iphone to connect to another carrier is exempted by the copyright office. But jail-breaking the iphone/ipod touch to add another software (like background processing) is illegal. It is not that someone is going to come home and arrest me, but it is still Illegal.
You bought this device without this feature right?
When I bought this device, this feature was not there. I accept. Now, my grouse is NOT that I'm not getting the feature but that I'm being discriminated for no reason at all. If IPod Touch 3G can have it, my IPod touch 2G can have it too. IPod Touch 3G 8GB device has the same hardware as the 2G devices. Why is this discrimination ? Apple is not providing updates for free - they charge you 10$ for each upgrade. I'm still willing to pay but only that Apple is not willing to give me the feature.
If you feel so bad, they why did you buy from Apple and why not buy from the competitor?
When I looked at the reviews for buying the IPod touch, all the reviews about the device were good. But nobody wrote anything about this behavior of Apple. This device was released on Sep 2009 and I bought it on Feb 2010. I've been owning this device for only an year and they have already started phasing this device out.
Apple is indirectly forcing me to upgrade to their new devices but I had shelled out 430$ for my touch and there is no way I'm going to part with it. Had anyone had told me that you can buy this awesome device, but they will restrict you in all possible ways and they will start discriminating you after one year, I would have given a deep thought.
So, if any of you are contemplating on buying Apple products, I have one piece of advice for you - you can buy their awesome devices but they will stop supporting those devices from year 2 onwards. If you are ok with it, then buy else check out Android based devices.
