Day2: Thailand And Cambodia Trip

Woke up by 4:30 in the morning and took bath since we had to catch a flight at 8AM to siem reap. Since we didn't know whether taxis are available at 5 am, we had asked the hotel for a taxi who charged us 500 Baht. Checked out of the hotel and went to airport by 6:30. Went in to the bangkok airways counter, got the boarding pass and moved on to the passport counter. Then through the security check and went to D5 gate. Ate the snacks I had bought previous night and then boarded the flight at 8AM. Reached Siam Reap by 9AM. Did the immigration (customs was just filling in a form and dropping it in a box on the way out) and caught taxi at taxi counter. The charge was 7$ from airport to Angkor Pearl hotel and we hired one to reach the hotel for early check-in. Unfortunately, the hotel had also sent us a tuk tuk to pick us up from Airport which we promptly missed.

Asked the cab guy "huen" to wait and he charged us 30$ to show us angkor wat and angkor thom in a day. Went to the room, took all the necessary docs and cam and went out to the temple. entry fee is 40$ for 3 days. Forgot to hire a guide in the city and went around looking around the temples ourselves. Had tender coconut for 3$ apiece.  Had omlette and rice for lunch in hotel nearby. Went to tomb rider temple by 4:45. Asked by cabbie for boom boom. Came back to hotel to wash face and then go to the apsara dance in the hotel nearby booked by the hotel only. Went there in a tuk tuk who charged us 2$. Had food from 6:30 to 7:30 and then watched the dance till 8:30. Came out and visu went for 5$ massage. Joe and I went for a walk but it was a bad decision since any tuk tuk driver who saw us on the pavement was asking about "Boom Boom". We had to walk with our heads facing down to avoid looking at those people. While going toward the hotel today evening, a tuk tuk driver mumbled "Sir Boom Boom!". We said no and kept moving. Went shopping in the nearby  mall for the snacks. Everything works in $ here. bought some potato chips and marie biscuit. came back to the room by 9:30. Visu went to loo and locked the door from inside. The door could not be opened again and had to call the hotel front desk to open it. He had to bring lock smith from outside and opened the door. He then silently asked, "Sir do you want boom boom?!". We said "No" and visu wanted to find out how many people say no when asked. The reception guy responded saying "20%". Proud to be in that 20% :-). Charged all the batteries and blogged about day. Time is 11:30 PM cambodia time now. Grrrr.

For want of a nail

Yesterday, I told my friend that we usually miss out on small things when working on a bigger issue and that would ultimately lead to failure. It reminded me of a rhyme I had learnt in my formative years called "For Want of a Nail".  This rhyme is sometimes quoted to explain butterfly effect and chaos theory. For want of a nail the shoe was lost. For want of a shoe the horse was lost. For want of a horse the rider was lost. For want of a rider the battle was lost. For want of a battle the kingdom was lost. And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.

My blood is purple

The news about Oracle acquisition broke out on Monday evening at 5. There were lot of things running in my mind and wanted to blog about it. Meanwhile, Puspha had mailed me a blog entry and it was more or less on the same lines as my thoughts. I have reproduced the blog content below ...

Outsourcing - The Simpsons Version

This video is an edited version of The Simpsons programme. Homer's manufacturing facility is outsourced to bangalore and he travels to India. How he adapts himself to Indian environment is the gist of the episode. Hilarious. Edit1: Full version of the simpsons video can be found here - The Simpsons 1717 Kiss Kiss Bang Bangalore
